Frequently asked questions about Regios.

General FAQ

  • After an intensive preparation phase, the Regios Energiegenossenschaft SCEmbH, based at Galgenau 28, 4240 Freistadt, was founded on 17 July 2024. Its 41 founding members include citizens and entrepreneurs as well as municipalities from the Freistadt region.

Regios has been entered in the commercial register since 25 September 2024.

  • The business purpose of the Regios energy cooperative is the financing, construction and operation of photovoltaic installations on suitable rooftops and open spaces, as well as holding stakes in wind farms in the Freistadt region.

  • Our mission is to secure self-determination over the region's energy supply through shared ownership.

  • The goal of Regios is to play a decisive role — together with citizens, businesses, municipalities and partners — in achieving net energy self-sufficiency for the Freistadt region, including helping to supply urban areas.

  • By purchasing/subscribing to cooperative shares and granting a member loan.

Participation FAQ

  • By purchasing/subscribing to cooperative shares and granting a member loan.

  • One share costs €500.

  • With just one share you are a full member and, as a co-owner, entitled to vote at the general assembly. Regardless of the number of shares held, every member has one vote.
Even a single share entitles you to purchase regional green electricity at the particularly favourable members' tariff.

  • Cooperative shares may not bear interest. However, Regios provides for a dividend distribution on members' capital contributions as soon as a balance-sheet profit is available. The dividend is based on low capital costs and is capped by the articles of association at three per cent of the nominal value. The general assembly decides on distributions and their amount.

    1. After submitting the declaration of interest, you will be sent the membership application form.

    2. Complete the membership form in full, photograph or scan it and send it to office@regios.at.

    3. Please transfer the amount for your cooperative shares to the account provided without delay. The transfer confirms your declaration of membership.

    4. Within 14 days of your payment you will receive confirmation of admission.

  • Each member's liability is limited to their cooperative shares; there is no obligation whatsoever to make additional contributions.

  • Granting a member loan is tied to subscribing to cooperative shares — namely €1,000 per cooperative share.

Conversely, cooperative shares can be purchased without granting a loan.

    The following table illustrates this:

  • Loan of €1,000 per cooperative share

    • Contract term of 20 years; annual distribution of 3.5% interest p.a.

    • Repayment of the subordinated loan by Regios from the 11th year after payment

  • Interest income from the subordinated loan agreement is subject to the investor's personal progressive income tax rate and must be declared. Tax reporting and payment to the tax office is the investor's own responsibility.

For tax matters, please consult a tax adviser you trust.

Regional Green Electricity FAQ

  • Yes — on our online marketplace at OurPower it is already possible to buy green electricity directly from Regios. At www.ourpower.coop/regios you can request your personal offer.

  • For every project, Regios assesses whether it makes sense to sell the electricity generated through an energy community or simply as regional green electricity from Regios.

In principle, over the medium term we will develop and use every available means of containing costs and risks in view of the highly volatile energy market. In particular, long-term supply contracts are intended to secure both the producer price and the region's electricity needs for private, commercial and municipal consumers at prices that remain stable over the long term.

  • 60% comes from regional PV installations and 20% each from wind and hydro power plants. Half of the PV share comes from new and half from existing Regios PV installations. Taken together, this makes it possible to offer a favourable and price-stable electricity tariff.

  • The electricity mix in the Regios pool consists of 60% PV installations and 20% each of wind and hydro power plants. Half of the PV share comes from new and half from existing Regios PV installations. Taken together, this makes it possible to offer a favourable and price-stable electricity tariff.

Land Development FAQ

  • When selecting sites and developing projects, Regios follows the requirements defined in the regional open-space PV strategy and the Upper Austrian PV strategy. In addition, every project undergoes an internal sensitivity review by the cooperative's supervisory board.

  • Alongside energy generation, the land is also used to produce locally typical agricultural products and/or for biodiversity purposes. These are classic dual- or multiple-use systems. We prefer that landowners continue to farm the land themselves.

  • To ensure planning certainty for tenant and landlord, long-term land-use agreements are entered into.

  • 60% comes from regional PV installations and 20% each from wind and hydro power plants. Half of the PV share comes from new and half from existing Regios PV installations. Taken together, this makes it possible to offer a favourable and price-stable electricity tariff.

Energy Strategy FAQ

  • Because it matters that the expansion of renewable energy installations — undisputedly necessary in the region — takes place in an orderly fashion, and that the opportunities it brings serve the benefit of the entire population.

  • The open-space PV strategy is embedded in an overall energy strategy and encompasses the core efforts to achieve net energy self-sufficiency in the region. One scenario also considered supplying urban areas (Linz).

    1. Greater energy independence & security of supply and more predictable energy prices

    2. Creating fairness in the region

    3. Opportunities to participate in the projects

    4. Bringing the greatest possible value creation into the region and keeping it there
